we had a mini lop that lived in a cage in the corner of our kitchen away from food prep. He was no problem at all and he was litter trained so his clean up wasn't bad. He loved his daily food scraps, ie carrot peals. We would take him out to play with and pet him sometimes.. I don't see any problem with where ever you want to put them.

I don’t think rabbits in an attic is a good idea. Is there any light? Plus that’s gonna be a lot of climbing stairs to carry food and water. I would think it’d be better for a person in an apartment to focus on plants and trade with someone for meat or eggs.

A lot of people think that animals are comfortable in the same temp. ranges as we humans. That's why you see horses blanketed when it's only in the 50's. Drives me nuts! Good for you thinking about the nature of the animal.

The lack of natural light and darkness would concern me over time

I think this will work out just fine. I had an angora rabbit on my dresser for years. He was my bud. I don't see how this wouldn't work. Your attic will still be warmer than the out doors, and rabbits survive just fine out there. To do a meat rabbit system though, you would need a third cage for the babies to grow in.

When the urge to homestead is so strong... :D Very interesting experiment!

Interesting project, I have had plenty pets in the house but never animals for food and actually not sure I even want to try lol. The smell would put me off ;-)

Ferret Nation cages would be easier to clean and keep from smelling. I have done this in an apartment in the past. Totally doable. I did potty train my rabbits in those cages which helped immensely.

In my opinion-unsanitary and unkind to the animals. You could indoor garden (micro greens and sprouting) ferment store bought veggies -city forage food ( survival style) and loads of other stuff more suitable for apartment life. Good to learn new things and be flexible (part of prepping) think of it as homeschooling for you and the kids. Maybe you won’t like it so much but the girls could find something they love that could be their contribution to the homestead

I am sure that you can keep them indoors in the attic. The only question i have is if they have some natural light up there?

I think it's ok to have rabbits inside. No biggie. Just get them out to play once in a while. Your life. Your decisions. I have complete confidence in your ability to treat the animals with respect. Good luck 😁

You know, It's not you've never raised a rabbit. You could use a plant light to give them some daylight. It will be interesting to see how it goes. My friend's dad raised rabbits to feed his two sons. My friend was 6 foot, five and his brother was 6 foot, two. The extra protein helps your kids grow.

if you keep the food downstairs where you see it, you’ll remember to care and feed bunnies

When you took a long shot of your Daughter in front of the cage my fist thought was “How did mom grow her hair out so fast” Never tried rabbits in the addict, will be interesting to see how that turns out.

you can let them out to run and play in the apt... the would have so much fun.

That seems like it's kind of mixing pet and livestock. I have too much trouble killing them anyway. I can hunt, no problem, because we both know what's going on. Raising livestock I have too much trouble with it. Rabbit is good lean meat. Can't beat it really. I tried eating cottontail before and I thought it was terrible. Tame rabbits are delicious. Snowshoe kind of taste like that, also.

Not sure how you can keep enough rabbits inside for food without stinking up the place. As a landlord, I would not be too thrilled about it.
