Giggling Barn Owl, Quincy

Rescued barn owl Quincy loves massages. She has been raised in our little sanctuary since she was a baby. We believe this adolescent owl was born around New Years 2015. She was at a market in pretty bad shape with her sibling (who was in worse shape. .and we regret not being able to rescue them both) More about Quincy coming soon, but wanted to share how this little barn owl has won our hearts.

Liberate Wings is a bird rescue sanctuary where we rescue, rehabilitate, and release birds/raptors back into the wild once they are ready. Sometimes birds come to us in really bad shape so we just hope to give them a place to stay to live out their remaining days. We hope to rehabilitate all the birds that come here, but sometimes it's not possible for them to survive out in the wild, so we have a few living with us. You
can Donate for food and veterinary costs or Sponsor your own bird for release (you can even name it).

More stories to come!

Owls are absolutely ethereal creatures. They seem to be very expressive in their own ways even. But, it’s their ability to be completely silent that I find the most intriguing. Especially when in flight. I understand that their feathers are what allow this, but I still think it’s magical.

Late one evening a few years back I was still awake. I’d been on the couch with my legs tucked under me sketching. I was completely engrossed in what I was doing, but I couldn’t take it any longer. I’d had a strange feeling that I’d been trying to just ignore as I wanted to get as much of the idea I had for my sketch onto my paper before I lost the mental picture of it. As I said, I just couldn’t take it any longer. I put my pencil down and went to stand up. And I almost immediately froze.

As I raised my head and looked up, I saw it. Directly across the room from me perched on the back of the wingback chair was an owl. One of the most striking owls I’d ever seen. It wasn’t some special rare species or anything of the sort…it just exuded intelligence which was beautiful to see.

I couldn’t stop myself and exclaimed, “Oh, wow…” It was just sitting there staring at me. I had NO IDEA how it managed to get inside the house. We’d had our front door open for a while maybe 20-30 minutes in total a few hours earlier that evening. But, I still could t figure out how this spectacular animal had gotten inside and stayed undetected for hours. And then ultimately decided to perch itself on the back of my chair and just stare at me.

I knew that there was no way that it could stay so I had to figure out how to let it back outside. And do so in a way that wouldn’t run the risk of it ending up hurt. I didn’t want to startle it causing it to crash into walls and such as it tried to either escape or stay away from me. So, I slowly stood up. Its eyes never left me.

The wall just behind my new nocturnal friend was almost exclusively windows. I needed to push aside the blackout curtains that were hanging over the windows and then open at least one of the windows. I took a hesitant step forward. The owl’s eyes never left me. And it didn’t move at all. I took another step, but to the side this time. Again, its eyes never left me, but its head turned in order to maintain its gaze. I just kept moving slowly, and it kept watching me.

By this time, my son had materialized in the room and was watching what was going on. He’d heard me speak and finally showed up to investigate what my problem was. He started to speak, but he ended up holding his tongue. Even he was aware that we needed to refrain from spooking this bird.

It actually allowed me to move across the room, push aside the curtain, and open the window that was about 2-3 feet from it. After I’d opened up an “exit/escape route”, I backed away from it.

My son and I just stood there and watched the owl. The owl would look at me, then at my son, and repeat. It did this a few times, but I finally- and stupidly in a way- said, “I’ve opened the window for you so that you can leave when you’re ready.” I heard my son quietly snort in amusement at my bizarre choice of words. After a few minutes of silence, it ended up flying once around the room and then swooped out the window…. Where it perched on top of a post just outside the window. I pulled the window shut, but left the curtains open. I’ve forgotten how long it stayed out there watching the goings on inside the house. But, I’ll never forget how it felt to look up and see this beautiful bird sitting there staring at me as if it were quietly judging every move I made. They truly are phenomenal creatures!
