This sequence was apparently edited by the same people who prepare the versions of classic TV series for syndication. "M*A*S*H", "I Love Lucy", and "Cheers" are only three examples of shows that are so hacked up in reruns that various references (even jokes) make no sense because the passages that laid the groundwork for them earlier have been cut. Actually, in a way, it's a backhanded tribute to the writers in question: there is so little fat in their work that the only way to cut their stories at all is to cut bone and muscle. Very good for their egos. For the audience, not so much.
