Setting up the Contoso Retail Dataset in SQL Server

In which Johnny takes you through step by step how to set up a local instance of SQL Server and then import the Contoso Retail Data Warehouse so that you can have your very own database playground for experimenting and building out Power BI solutions.

Ok, maybe a slightly tenuous Power BI link, but hopefully useful for those getting started who want experience interacting with a SQL database.

If you don't know what this has got to do with an avocado and a can of craft ale... well, you're just going to have to watch the video.

Even with over 30 years of experience with Microsoft products, I would not have figured that out by myself!! Thank you!

Thanks I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Always felt I couldn't replicate and properly learn Power BI without access to the full Contoso data set. Cheers!

That was a great walkthrough and respected the effort in the comedy. This worked like a charm!! You have a new subscriber!

In the part where you click restore in the connections, I do not have that option available to me. I'm stuck as to how to connect to this database.

If you don't have an existing connection, then RESTORE is NOT AN update this piece for those of us who have never established a connection before.

Thanks so much... I was looking for link to MS sample databases and SQL Server install instructions, but got so much more... Azure Data Studio is really the cool tool... :) What a pitty, it is not available as VS Code extension :)

Hello,

I downloaded the data set. I want to import in excel but its quiet large.

How can i reduce the rows in order to be more suitable for excel?

I think in some DAX optimization video Alberto Ferrari mentions he's going to test it with "the full contoso model" wich is several gigs in size and I think he says like 200 M rows. Not that I need it at this point, but just curious on where/how he got the larger version.

Hey buddy do you have any exhaustive details of different types of joins in relationship with filters and how it behaves?
