"The mayor doesn't exist." The sudden fear that shot up my spine when I heard those words.

Running a false hydra for my characters right now. One of my players loves them and talked about them often, so in order to hint it without tipping him off I did small little time jumps. A player walks outside alone and is suddenly injured and missing a spell slot. A player wakes up outside the inn, heart beating fast and sword in hand. He goes back to the room and the curtains are open. I place them after the hydra encounter, but they don’t remember it, so they think it’s a time jump, but really it’s deleted time. KING CRIMSON, IT JUST WORKS!!!

This is why I love working with a cast of all newbies and one veteran. The newbies have all the fun reactions and mystery, and the veteran knows what’s going on well enough to keep them all alive.

The gradual reveal of the little clues to a false hydra makes them one of my fave monsters to run

"My character doesn't even think there ever _was_ a mayor"

Our DM ran the False Hydra. The twist was that one character in our party was completely deaf- full on punctured eardrums, could not hear a jet engine running next to them. And so that one character in the whole party was immune to the False Hydra's effect, so he had to figure out a way to save the rest of us. It was AWESOME and creepy as shit- DM is a big fan of horror, creepypastas, SCP and the like so she gave some very vivid descriptions and the ambient music she had playing during the sessions did not make it any less spooky.

False hydra are just an amazing and terrifying concept. To completely forget hours, or even years of your life. And the best part is when you do it as people slowly want to leave the game. Running a hydra for the remaining players and just denying the existence of the old group is the best gaslight I've ever seen and the story all that much more compelling.

At the end of our last campaign, our DM Introduced a false hydra that could consume through it's skin. The first time one of us threw an enemy into it, it put fear in Everyone on the field

If you encounter a continuity error, it’s either a mistake or a TPK.

Ran this once where the players were using Survivor statblocks from Van Richten's, and ran a slice of life campaign that got worse and worse until they figured it out it was a false hydra. Called the campaign "Nothing Ever Happens in Stillwater"

“DM needs to take better notes.”
Me: Is this . . . ?
“We were greeted by the mayor”
Me: Yup, it is

The moment the vet player looked up after the newbie said "doesn't exist, " I immediately felt that same panic because I LOVE the lore on that creature. lmao

Just realised you could use a false hydra for when a player isn't able to/doesn't want to continue

As a newb DM, I ran a campaign where no one had the idea to talk to more than one person in a space. So I rolled percentiles every time. The person had a 33% chance to "knows a lot, know bits and pieces, or don't know" the terror on the veterans players face as they realized no one knew if they had a local farmer or not. Jeb was just a very busy man and most of their NPCs rolled Bits and Pieces or Don't Know

“You cast silence, the once seemingly empty streets start filling up with bodies and bones that weren’t there a minute ago, the once tranquil atmosphere has transformed from a comforting dream like state to the dark reality that surrounds you now. With the smells of iron and ash permeating and assaulting your senses as you truly see what was once hidden from you…”

Running a false hydra for my table's Halloween session this Saturday. The whole table are newbies, none of them know the false hydra trope, and I've tweaked it to false giant spider swarm.

So, I asked my brother to build a character sheet several levels ahead of my players.

I’ve been seeding my brother’s character’s inventory into my players’ possessions.

During combat or during certain relevant scenes, I’ll tell a players to take up a buff. Or to heal x amount of hit points. Or to take advantage on a check for arbitrary reasons. Or I’ll disregard a failed check and tell them information they shouldn’t know.

One player has an old journal where the author is clueless on who a character is despite writing massive entries about them.

The party’s mentor/sponsor has let it slip that he can’t remember a member of his own party and has no idea how he had forgotten them.

This is all leading up to my party one day finding out that from day 1, they had a bugbear alchemist as party member and they have 0 idea who this man is or why he has a journal detailing vivid memories of the party.

The party decided to go to a different region away from the false hydra. I get to spend another arc really driving in their waning sanity.
