I still remember when the discussion was, if a boat can actually go faster than the wind speed. You had those that said it is impossible to go faster than the wind pushing them. Then you had those that said if you could eliminate most of the resistance and capture the wind you could actually go faster.
This was in the days of V hulls, huge sails and crews with large brass ones.
