The third-ranked Wayzata girls basketball team edged top-ranked Hopkins 55-53 Friday at Wayzata High School. Wayzata had the lead for much of the first half before Hopkins surged to in front 27-25 at halftime. The Royals built the lead to 11 before Wayzata rallied, tying the game and then going back in front. With Wayzata up by six late in the game, it was the Royals’ turn to rally. They scored six straight, capped by Liv McGill’s spinning layup with 13 seconds left to tie the game 53-53. Wayzata’s Abby Krzewinski made two free throws to give her team the lead back, and a last try for Hopkins wouldn’t fall.

Brynn Senden had 19 points and Sophie Hawkinson 11 to lead Wayzata. NuNu Agara scored 19 and Taylor Woodson 13 for Hopkins. It’s Wayzata’s first win over Hopkins since January 2018.
