Alberobello is a city in the Italian region of Apulia. It is known for its trulli, whitewashed stone houses with conical roofs. The trulli are exceptional evidence of dry stone buildings with a conical or pyramidal roof (the name is derived from the Greek word "dome"), a technique that goes back to prehistoric times and is still in use in Puglia today. They are common throughout the Valle d’Itria as rural shelters for livestock and agricultural implements, but the greatest concentration of trulli is found in Alberobello: there are more than 1,500 in the historic center of this town, almost all of them perfectly preserved. The Trulli of Alberobello were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 as a remarkable example of spontaneous architecture in an urban and landscape context of great historical value. According to some studies, the trulli were created in the 14th century out of a ruse to avoid taxes to have to pay! The King of Naples had issued a tax for every newly built village. The Count of Acquaviva, feudal lord of the area, agreed with the settlers not to use mortar to join the blocks from which they built their homes. So they kept the appearance of makeshift buildings that seemingly easy to tear down and therefore not taxable. On top of the domes there are brilliant white decorative battlements that are supposed to keep away evil spirits and negative influences. Symbols related to religion or folk tradition are often painted with white ash on the roofs.
