Sadhguru: A proper consecration of Naga has not occurred in over 800 years. Why Naga? Unfortunately, people often think the Naga or serpent is merely a crawling creature. In many parts of the world today, snakes are even considered evil. However, across the globe without exception – in North America, South America, Africa, Mesopotamia, Greece, Crete, Central Asia, China, and of course Bharat and the rest of Asia – serpent or Naga worship was an integral part of civilizational growth for thousands of years. But in the last 1500 years, there has been an annihilation of this Naga worship.

Naga is not about worship per se, but about an access to new possibilities. The significant aspect of a snake, particularly a cobra, is its ability to perceive. People may think it is a crawling creature, but Shiva places it not at his feet but next to his head. He treats Naga as his equal. He is making a statement, "In perception and knowledge, he is as good as me."

Another aspect is that modern science recognizes the existence of a reptilian brain within the human brain. This reptilian brain forms the basis of our survival instincts. Our ability to survive in this world is primarily due to this reptilian brain. Naga is connected to that dimension of who you are, activating that aspect so that your survival process becomes a play.

The most tragic aspect of human life on the planet right now is that people are investing their entire lifespan just to survive. Human life is not about earning a living; it is about making a life out of this. With a millionth of your brain, worms and insects are able to make a living. However, human beings, with such a vast sense of intelligence, perception, and experiential depth, have unfortunately been cultured to believe that their whole life is about earning a living.

The intention of Naga is to make earning a living or the survival process a very simple and playful act so that your intelligence can be invested towards your transcendence – how to go beyond the limitations of who we are right now.
