In this video of my mobile app prototype watch how you encounter notifications of assurance and engaging moments tracking your route. By influencing the rider’s experience and pushing the limits of what I learned, these micro moments enhance the rider’s journey from ordinary to extraordinary.

PROTOTYPE VIDEO CHAPTERS
Below are prototype video chapters explaining UX flows of my “How to Track Your Route” mobile app prototype.

0:00 - Track Route
Tracking a route informs the user in real-time along their journey. It’s initialized from a schedule detail page providing stop notifications, available seating, transit connections and more.

0:13 - Stop Notification Banner
Once a user begins tracking their route, notification banners will appear throughout their journey. In this case the banner is alerting the user’s stop is next and where to board the train.

0:20 - Stop Notification List
Along with the map, the stop notification list keeps track in real-time how many stops are left. As each stop is reached a check mark appears and the duration to reach the next stop.

0:23 - Stop Tracking Dialog
At any time during their journey a user can stop tracking their route by tapping on the cancel icon. A dialog will display alerting the user they will no longer receive real-time updates.

0:29 - Track Route (Collapsed)
By tapping the arrow icon a user can expand and collapse route tracking vertically. In the collapsed state, they can still use the app while being informed how many stops are left.

0:48 - Transit Connections
Some users need to ride multiple transit providers in order to complete their journey. At the end of their route tracking the app will list all available transit connections nearby via banner.

0:51 - Transit Connections Nearby
When a user begins filtering, nearby places becomes more assistive by focusing on particular areas of the map. Then, tapping a location card selects it providing info and options.

0:58 - Transit Connection (Selected)
Once selected, the location card expands and the map zooms into that location. This helps a user evaluate their options to confidently make the best decision for their commute.

PROTOTYPE PROJECT SUMMARY
While on my pursuit of personal development, I’m always curious, always learning and this mentality has led me down many interesting paths. And after moving to Chicago I became so inspired by how the Google Maps app improved my city life I felt it was time to take the less safe path to learn the skills and software to prototype a mobile app. So I left my UX design lead role of 13 years to position myself for new career opportunities and moved back home with my parents to invest in myself full-time.

Working my entire career on the Windows platform limited me from using the industry standard Mac software to design and prototype mobile apps. While living and working in Chicago, I had a negative first experience using the Ventra app, a local public transit app, and felt this was the perfect opportunity to teach myself how to design a mobile app, using new Mac software.

In 8 months I redesigned the Ventra app creating 8 high-fidelity prototypes, 4 inspired by Google’s Cloud Vision, without prior experience using a Mac or developing a mobile app to demonstrate a working knowledge of Sketch, Principle and Material Design by implementing my Android app concept.

By following a design thinking process, I got to know the first-time rider to daily commuter, think big to generate innovative ideas and experiment to test meaningful app improvements. By storytelling and framing problems from task analysis and journey maps, I delivered a UX vision and strategy of user and wire flows to build prototypes of a more inclusive, user-centered product.
