Показать описание
An American pika emits its shrill call while darting in and out of its burrow and the surrounding crags of a Colorado scree field.

Pikas live in tundra and alpine ecosystems and are unique in that they do not hibernate. Rather, they spend the temperate months foraging for grasses and other plants to store (a process called “haying”), which they use as sustenance during the winter. Pikas are so adapted to cold environments that they overheat if ambient temperatures reach above 25° C (77° F). They are therefore increasingly at risk of extinction due to global climate change.

Filmed in 5K 360.
