I see a lot of people discovering The Voice Squad through Bones and I think that is really cool! For me it was the opposite, I found Bones after listening to a slowed down version of this song to try and learn all the lyrics. Music is magic.

Elmo flips through his mom's old cassettes in the backroom. He blows the dust off this one and decides he likes the cover art, pops it in the player.

One of my favorite carols performed by one of my favorite Irish music groups. Win, win!

*Merry Christmas everyone!*

*The Voice Squad* - Down in Yon Forest
From *Holly Wood* (1991)

*The Voice Squad* is an Irish vocal trio comprised of Phil Callery, Frank McPhail & Gerry Cullen originally formed in the late 1980s.
Borrowing from the British harmony singing tradition to sing songs from the Irish repertoire that would normally be sung solo and unaccompanied, the Voice Squad have created a very unique and original new style.
“Down in Yon Forest” is an English religious song dating back to the 16th century and features on "Holly Wood", the trio’s second album released in 1991. The recording includes wonderful harmonised versions of traditional Irish songs and carols recorded in St Kevin’s church in the Wicklow mountains.
After a 25 year recording hiatus, The Voice Squad have released a third album “Concerning of Three Young Men” in 2014.

Lyrics:

Down in yon forest there stands a hall
The bells of Paradise, I hear them ring
Things covered all over with purple and pall
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything

Down in that hall there is a bed
The bells of Paradise, I hear them ring
All scarlet the cover, the cover it spread
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything

And on that bed there lies a knight
The bells of Paradise, I hear them ring
And he doth bleed by day and by night
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything

Down under that bed there runs a flood
The bells of Paradise, I hear them ring
The one half runs water, the other runs blood
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything

Down at the bed's foot there springs a thorn
The bells of Paradise, I hear them ring
That bloomed its white blossom the day he was born
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything

And over that place the moon shines bright
The bells of Paradise, I hear them ring
To show that our Savior was born on that night
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything

I'm not even a Christian but I like this song because of the interesting lyrics and the way they sing it in an old-fashioned style. I love old, OLD religious songs from hundreds of years ago

*LYRICS HERE* :

After some digging and lots of comparing, I realised I was likely never going to find the exact lyrics for this version of Down in Yon Forest. So I copied the one on Wikipedia and listened to this over and over, changing what needed changing. Big thanks to Tanner Striegel in the comments for the helpful corrections!

Down in yon forest there stands a hall:
The bells of Paradise I hear them ring:
Things covered all over with purple and pall:
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything.

Down in that hall there is a bed:
The bells of Paradise I hear them ring:
All scarlet, the cover, the cover it spread:
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything.

And on that bed there lies a knight:
The bells of Paradise I hear them ring:
And he doth bleed by day and by night:
And I love my Lord Jesus above anything
