The perfect love detail about Hiccup's father 🥰

Love has a very important place in the How to train your dragon series, or rather emotions. You may have seen the beauty of hiccup and Astrid's love throughout the series, but this also applies to other characters. You may have noticed that hiccup's father, Stoick the Vast, wears a helmet. This helmet is actually made of armor, the only thing he has left of his wife after he lost her. Stoick did this so that he would never forget his wife. 20 years later, when he sees her for the first time, he is speechless and immediately takes off his helmet because he no longer needs a helmet to remember his wife who is right in front of his eyes. It is really admirable that they depict such a love without the characters even having to speak. As another detail, in the opening scene of the movie, when the famous dreamwork logo appears, you can see Toothless flying very quickly in the background.

Stoick gave the other half of the breastplate helmet to Hiccup and it's seen, even in the TV shows and specials how much he treasures it. He lost it in the sea once and Toothless got it back for him.

I will always hold their reunion as one of the best I've ever seen. It was done so well and seemed almost like this quiet, private thing we weren't meant to see because of how vulnerable it is. Like it was a fragile moment that could disappear at any time. She's scared about how he'll react and he just seems drawn to her, in awe like all his prayers to the gods have been finally answered and only cares about her being there. "You're as beautiful as the day I lost you." Will always, ALWAYS be a line to strike my heart.

I don’t get how people didn’t notice toothless in the httyd dreamworks logo. Like that was the FIRST thing I noticed when I watched the movie as a kid

Also, the helmet thing is something called politeness. He took it off because it was not only a romantic gesture, but so she understood something. It is part of the Viking traditions. Because you never see him do it again except when he is in the house.

No no... taking off your helmet/ hat/ whatever's on your head is a sign of respect and humility before entering or addressing another person's private space...

And Stoick is definitely is moving in~

Astrid is one of those characters you had a big crush on as a kid you know? Like Nani from Lilo and Stitch or Shego from Kim Possible.

She makes me mad that she straight up abandoned her family in the end when her husband clearly loved her so much and would've listened to her in the end because he loves her 😢

While yes, he deeply loved his wife, in the first film, I think his helmet being a piece of her armor was purely a joke intended for those old enough to understand it. Lest one forget, he tells his son that the helmet he gives him was made from his mother's breastplate and that his helmet was the other one. The subtle joke was that Hiccup's mother had an ample bosom, one large enough to make two helmets. As Valka is not a fully formed character and never seen in the first film, it is left to the viewers' imagination as to what she looked like. Unless additional metal was used, one can clearly see from her character model in the second film that her breastplates would have been too small to make a helmet from each.

This by no means diminishes his love for her, but the obvious adult intended joke is still there and is, in my opinion, the real reason he wears it.

This series does an incredible job at showing fatherly, motherly, romantic, and brotherly love through all the characters and their connections to Hiccup. Obviously Hiccup and Astrid are an incredible love story, Stoic and Hiccup are a very good father and son story with a great example of a father who doesn’t understand his son finally bonding after he sees the truth, Hiccup finding him mom and getting to be with her again, and then the brotherly love and camaraderie between Hiccup and the other dragon riders in his class. It’s just all amazing!
