Barren Island Oysters - Getting Started

Sustainably Grown and Responsibly Harvested! Based in the heart of the Chesapeake, Barren Island Oysters are raised with care in the open-waters of the Bay using the most advanced, sustainable aquaculture techniques.

An ideal combination of nutrients, minerals, oxygen, and salinity produces Maryland's best oyster. Our triploid oysters grow faster and have proven more disease resistant than their wild diploid cousins, although they look and taste the same. By placing them in off-bottom cages we increase the flow of water and protect the bottom of the bay. Our location is buffered from urban and agricultural run-off; our open waters are bordered on both sides by the width of the Chesapeake to the west and the Black-water National Wildlife Refuge to the east.
