When I was in high school the "Ghost smoke demonstration" was something completely different.

A note for intrepid home chemists:
This is ammonia and fairly dangerous hydrochloric acid. It makes ammonium salt, which is relatively harmless.

If you do this with ammonia and relatively harmless bleach, you get fairly dangerous monochoride gas. In practice, it's pretty similar to mustard gas.

Chlorine solutions are pretty dangerous to mix unless you know exactly what you're doing.

We have an exp. called salt analysis in our chem lab.
There we check the presence of ammonia in salt by holding a rod dipped in AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE near the mouth of the test tube containing HYDROCHLORIC ACID.
I was able to connect the concept to what I'm studying rn.

I did a kinda mischief in the chemistry lab as a kid. Students were doing some experiments with hydrochloric acid. They had to wash their test tubes with HCl into the sink. I would quickly go before and pour some anhydrous ammonia into the sink. As they would pour the HCl into the sink, dense white fumes would come off and scare all

In Denmark those crystals are known as salmiak, it's one of the important ingredients in many types of licorice here. We even go around the EU laws about how much of it you can put in candy because people just like the strong taste that well.

It can also be 'ghost smoke' because the two chemicals combine to create chloramine fumes; something that will turn you into a ghost if you breathe it in. (You can also get this effect from pointing a narrow light/laser on a black background and blow any kind of smoke into it. The shaft of light will illuminate the smoke and the black background will mask the remainder in the frame!)
