Things Only Adults Notice In Captain Planet

Saving the planet is of utmost importance today, so maybe it's time to revive the popular '90s cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The environmentalist superhero cartoon ran for six seasons and taught kids about the importance of taking care of our home.

Captain Planet and The Planeteers taught kids the meaning of “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle," and through the combined powers of the elements of earth, wind, fire, water, and heart, the Planeteers summoned Captain Planet to save the day. Even though the animated series was made for educational purposes and to advocate for environmentalism, it was also highly entertaining and one of the most popular cartoons of its time. But here’s what only adults will notice if they revisit Captain Planet and The Planeteers.

One episode that dealt with drug addiction got pretty dark. In fact a friend of one the characters actually dies in the episode. It was rare to see such reality in these early 90’s cartoons.

I remember those days at school me and my friends use to pretend to be planeteers calling captain planet. And those nights when cartoons aired on TNT toons like captain planet the jetsons looney tunes ect before bed time.

Those were my happiest childhood memories.

As awkward as this show might have seemed, there were some pretty heart-wrenching moments in it, like the scene where the bad guys kill innocent animals for sport which have been raised to be killed in a controlled hunting atmosphere. In that scene, an innocent, tamed panther is lovingly caressing its owner, because it trusts the man, and he just shoos it off into the enclosure to be killed by the rich clients and it gets killed. Poor thing. 90s cartoons were unforgivingly brutal.

Verminous Skumm is a unique case among the Eco-villains, since he primarily targeted human health and society rather than the environment. He got some pretty dark storylines, like the drug episode (he sold a drug called Bliss that got one of the Planeteers hooked), and the AIDS awareness episode when he whipped up a frenzy against a teen with AIDS (loosely based on the real-life Ryan White). I think the writers were using him to represent serious social problems that went beyond ecology, which Ted Turner was not shy about addressing.

Dude, speak for yourself. I'D watch that. And it would do today's kids good to have a show like that, given just how worse the environment's become since the '90s.

The one thing I felt made Captain Planet most enjoyable to watch is that the villains would often win showing a destroyed earth, but somehow (because its TV) the show managed to put things back. My favorite villain of all time is Simon Bar Sinister from Underdog. He shrunk the world, He dried up all the world, he got mind control over everyone. Simon would always succeed and they would show what it is like for the villain to succeed. Same thing in Captain Planet. If often felt if they made a movie they should put a Sliders concept to it making an alternative earth dumping all their pollution into our earth using a sliding concept and Captain Planet would have to find a way to stop it.

I used to imagine if it get a live action movie version, who would be cast as Captain Planet. I've wondered by the time, Patrick Swayze would be the perfect choice for the role. Unfortunately it never happened. :(

This cartoon should have NEVER ended! Should have continued on and on like the Simpsons! Maybe the world would be a MUCH better place! Zarm said it himself when he first showed that with Ma ti iron fist he could have the hearts of the world with his power boosted by 100 times.

Zarm also stole his ring first and used it to manipulate people for his evil as well.

So yeah even back then I understood he had a far stronger power than the others.

We all thought the heart power sucked as a kid. When I became an adult and saw this show again, I realized that when Ma Ti hit puberty and takes an interest in girls, that heart ring will let him get any girl he wants. He could walk in with 2 hot girls and tell Wheeler to have fun just shooting fire at stuff.

I have the first season on DVD. The packaging is made from recycled material and it's so cool! I knew Whoopie Goldberg played Gaia, but I didn't know so many stars were in this series!

That's why it got canceled. The show was creating awareness of the enviroment and was a direct insult to the oil companies. And they were not having it.
