You are paying more than you need to: How to get more for less

Buy my book, "The Value of Others"

In an auction house, the lot goes to the highest bidder. In a very real sense, the highest bidder wins because no one else in the room believed the lot was worth that much. This means that the highest bidder almost certainly overpaid, and could have secured the same lot with fewer resources. The auction house is a useful analogy for work. In what ways might you be overpaying in your own life? In this episode, I'll discuss how to increase your return on investment through the strategic allocation of resources.

Back when I was still in the work force, I found and implemented the most time-efficient methods to get the work done. I handled more workload with less time than my peers. Occasionally that created a problem because management wanted everyone to look busy. You have to be careful with this. I was coming in at 8, going out for lunch, and leaving at 5, while my peers were coming in early, eating at their cubicles and working late. This only requires analyzing which activaties actually pay off and which ones are wasted.

Brilliant notion and approach, thanks! Puts a nice fresh twist on dealing with perfectionism and the "Good enough is good enough" and "Done is better than perfect" lines one sometimes comes across. Much appreciated, serendipity today.

I tend to agree with the good doctor most of the time. However, the hole in his analogy between an auction and a job is that of time. An auction is transaction where bidding and purchase is usually done in a short period of time. Jobs/careers, however, are performed over time. People earn their reputation for doing good work and contributing to their company over time. Supervisors and senior managers have memories and they generally know when a person is slacking. Generally, they probably won't do anything, as long a crucial projects are delivering timely value. However, we know that every 7-9 years, companies have broad based layoffs, Those who are approaching minimum effort will be in the first tranche of layoffs or the last tranche of promotions, depending on where the company is in the business cycle.

Sounds very much like Tim Ferriss' "Minimal Effective Dose" (MED) concept.

Bingo! You probably don’t know how right you are!

Every price is just someone’s guess, financial or otherwise, about what the market will bear.

Financially speaking, there’s plenty of proof all prices are misvalued by at least 30%, on average.

Socially, the misvaluations, are orders of magnitude different. Because the catalyst of all social interactions is some kind of hierarchy based entitlement.

It doesn’t take much thought, to realize the antidote for entitlement is capability.

Do-it-yourselfers never pay full price.

However, there are plenty of people that will think this is some kind of violation of what’s commonly called the Wealth Mindset, without realizing money is just ink smeared on dead trees.

Everyone that wants a permanent surplus only has to invent something, every once in awhile, that leverages cost, financial or otherwise. If you’re fresh out ideas, hitch your star to someone that isn’t.

Because there aren’t just more businesses, that haven’t been invented yet, there are more business categories that haven’t been invented, than ever have been invented in human history

Category is destiny!
