I felt like I had a good understanding of building a deck but I found this series while looking for tips since its been a couple decades since my last deck build. Ive got to say this series about deck building is the most informative and detailed video series out there for building a deck start to finish. All the small tips and things to consider along the build really helped my project. Even though I think I know how to build a deck, I feel like I learned a lot and want to say thank you for such a great job in this series.

I’m here August 2024 about to build our deck and this video is so informative and detailed! We’ve rewatched it a number of times and absolutely appreciate everything you shared! Thank you so much

This is honestly the best and most straight forward video on making stair stringers I've ever seen. Building my own steps always scared me on projects and I usually just bought the pre-cut ones from the box stores when available, but recently had a project that required taller steps and different sized than the pre-made ones. I literally just drew up and cut my first 6 stringers in probably 1 hr or less, saved a ton of money on doing it myself (precuts are insanely expensive..) and was so easy I would never think of doing it another way again. You've literally taught me a lifelong skill in less than a hour, and I thank you a million times over for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

What I like about your videos is the fact you show how you work around issues that come up. I know that every project has some snafus, but you are the only one who shows what can go wrong and how your work around them. That’s as valuable for me as the video itself. It keeps me thinking not only about the next step but also some of the pitfalls. Thanks for “Keeping It Real”

Shannon I am a retired GC from Calif. With 37 years in residential construction and 60 years around home building. It is such a pleasure to see a craftsman with pride in his work and a work ethic like yours. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. You restore my faith in the craft in craftsmanship.

I love it when you run into trouble as I would in real life. Other shows show everything going perfect, as if the world were like that. It shows me the troubleshooting you go through and I learn more. Thanks! You’re the man!

As a contractor I can feel your pain when you are finished with the project and the "homeowner" wants more. You seem to handle every issue with respect and as a professional. Thank you sir.

I watch your video and that's a self-employed journeyman carpenter here I would like to say I am very impressed with your skills and knowledge. It was nice to watch a Craftsman do what he does

Shannon you are an excellent teacher, which, as a former teacher myself is my highest compliment.  I love the fact that you put in mistakes and how you deal with them.   Excellent job and keep on doing these videos!

Since this was eight years ago I don't know if you will see this, but I have watched hundreds of these videos and you are the first person I have seen that knows what you're doing! Very nice job down to the smallest detail. I see people through bolt a beam on the side of a post almost a hundred percent of the time. They never say what the fasteners are made of and I picture 30 drunk people 8 feet in the air crashing to their deck when the bolts fail or act as a splitting wedge!

You explain stuff so well. I think of questions and you end up answering them. You would be an OUTSTANDING teacher or mentor. Really wish i had someone like you to show me the ropes. I could take info from these videos and apply them but its not the same as working with someone who knows and can show you in person.

Thank you Shannon, another job well done. I appreciate you since other contractors would charge $6, 000 to install this stairs and rail. Its very unfair of them to over charge their customers. Your the best Shannon. I learned a lot from you.

Shannon, I don't usually comment on any videos but I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate the detailed information and the fact the you don't edit much... It makes me think that your work is authentic and meticulous. Thanks for being genuine. It's refreshing and I look forward to watching many more videos from Houseimprovements.

Great series, really enjoyed them!  Also appreciate that you don't edit out the little bits that don't go according to plan - seeing how you deal with them is where the real learning is :-)

Great instructional series of videos Shannon. I watched all 6 twice and a few years ago I built my entry deck using the same balusters. They're easy to work with and look great when completed. Just recently, I redid my backyard deck with the same balusters, and it looks great. I got lots of compliments from my neighbors and it brought my deck up to date and here in Washington, they're holding up to the weather just fine. I actually was able to build my steps as well. Thanks for your help.
