Should I BUY an Extended WARRANTY On A USED CAR? | FACTS

An extended car warranty may help cover the cost of certain repairs to your vehicle when the manufacturer’s warranty expires, but they’re not for everyone. While it may sound like a good idea in theory, extended warranties often come with a high price tag and don’t necessarily cover everything that could go wrong. Instead of purchasing an extended warranty, it may make more sense to set aside the money you’d spend on it — and use the funds instead for needed repairs.

Some warranties aren't worth the paper there written on. Had 1 denied my claim only owned car for about two weeks, motor went then they said there was sludge in motor. That was 15yrs ago maybe they changed. How about a video on best warranty Co. Thks

Good video Lauren. When buying a used vehicle from a dealer, you aren’t forced to buy it at the time of sale, or from that dealer. Resist the pressure, if you’re not comfortable with their offer. You can buy an extended warranty later from an outside company. My local independent repair shop has a sales business as well. They can sell you a warranty on your used vehicle, even if you didn’t buy it from them. This is a particular concern, buying a warranty from the dealer, when they drop the price of the warranty significantly in response to your resistance. Makes me wonder if it has any value at all.

Not one person anywhere can tell you what company is honest to do business with. Everyone tells you how and what to lookout for but that’s it. I’m beginning to think there’s no companies out there that won’t screw you when having a claim. It’s a complete scam and everyone feeds off this industry. Even this channel.

I have gotten extended warranties a few times in the past. All but once were a waste of money. The one time they saved by bacon was an expensive repair where my steering column went bad. The repair cost more than the extended warranty and the extended warranty covered everything.

Beyond that one example I have found them to be incredibly inconsistent and entirely up to the discretions of the shop that has your car. For example I had a window regulator go bad on one door and it was covered by the extended warranty. Another regulator on a different door on the same car went bad a couple of months later that was not covered at the same shop with the same extended warranty. Im sure it came down to how the tech wrote up the repair. I also had a bumper to bumper warranty that decided to exclude HVAC and I wound up needing a new AC head unit, I just fixed it myself and canceled the warranty.

I bought one and it paid for itself. I bought a 2011 Saab 9-5 so I knew that they were no longer under warranty so I wanted something just in case. Turned out, I needed about 4k in repairs (nothing too major but Saabs are expensive to fix).

I purchased a car repair warranty from that big company that advertises heavily on TV and radio. I wish that I did more research first, because there are almost no repair shops within my 3city area that will do business with that company. I could have kept paying them every month and then if my car broke down there would be no where to take it for repairs.

It will cost more but if you go with the factory one they offer buy backs if the dealership doesn’t honor it. When I had a used Infiniti one dealership didn’t honor it so they send me a check for the repair. Best advice I can give look at x car and ask the dealership what companies they do business with, what parts they will cover.

Read about the labor costs. I had an experience were the Warranty would only cover $110.00 hr and that I was responsible for the difference. Average is about $130.00 hr Not a show stopper but adding this plus deductible 100-200 and cost to diagnose 150.00 it all adds up.
