That makes perfect sense in terms of using a rotary engine. You can have the generator running at a specific RPM and tune port timing and runner length (intake and exhaust) to have maximum peak efficiency and "power" at that RPM. The rotary was widely used in stationary generators for exactly this reason. Great use of existing tech. Props!

It's actually ingenius to mate the Mazda rotary as a hybrid system. Too bad it's not in an RX model. A two seat hybrid supercar would be great!

Waiting for these to get old and swap one of those rotaries in a bike😍😍😍

It will be a game changer, hopefully Mazda decide to release it in the RX series as well.

I had read up on the series hybrid system they have planned for this a while ago, and while this absolutely won't be an amazing car like the rx7 was, the reasons for it are smart. One of the reasons they dropped the rotary initially is due to inefficiency (both in fuel use, and pollution), which is what you have when you have to optimize an engine to work in a large range of rpms. When it only has to work at a single rpm, or a very small range, you can optimize it for that, so it becomes much more efficient at that task, and the rotary us well suited for that task due to it's power output per size, but also the fact that it's very smooth when compared to a small piston (two cylinder?) range extending engine. The reason they are putting it in a small crossover thing; because sadly that's what sells well. Mazda is a car company, and they need to sell many many vehicles to turn that profit they need to fund fun projects. Without actually firing up Wikipedia and looking at numbers, I would bet the cx5 small suv thing they currently have sells more units in a year at the moment than every year of every rx7 combined. I'm not happy about any of this (I had a really crappy beat up 1'st Gen rx7, and an rx8, and loved them both) but I do get why it is what it is.

Thats how my 06 highlander is. Gas motor to power the generator. Its AWD but there is no drive shaft to the back. It has like a rear electric motor to power the rear wheels when it needs too. Its pretty cool and it MOVES

Very nice, so while you are standing still oder rolling through the city you can charge the batteries with a soothing BRAPBRAPBRAPBRAP :)

More like: "Rotary charged Mazda's are here."

I can't quite work out if the rotary engine is for the generator or if it's for the generator? Please clarify.

So this is how they keep average co2 level, most companies gives us some kind of performance car, mazda puts rotary as generator, lol

They just killed off the mx-30 in the US. So no Mazda EV over here now.

Series hybrid is what it's called.

The people who wanted an RX7 back in the day now have kids and have jobs where they can afford a new SUV instead of a minivan… it’s like the Mach-E… it’s catering to a nerdy millennial dad whose gotta get places and wants a plug in hybrid that’s still kinda sporty.

Just upsetti spaghetti that the rotary is just a generator and not the drive

Using one of the least fuel efficient engine as a generator for an electric car 😂😂

Looks like Mazda are desperate for attention.

HYBRID. Good grief, the word Marty was looking for, that would instantly have relieved Moog's brain fog, is "hybrid."

Such a shame. Oh, as to your tin foil hat cat theory about comments only being shown if they are positive is absolutely a thing. I just watched a short of a guy getting demons expelled in a church and if any vid was going to have some f'd up comments it was this but every single comment was all positive religious affirmations and one or two that were sarcastic on the sly. Completely AI picked comments.
