A Note For Context

Why did I upload this video? This channel is above all a physical media collection’s channel. So there should be no question on which side I am standing on. As most physical media collectors reside in the US and Europe (this is based on my simple observation and my YouTube analytics report), I am trying to provide reports from my side, Asian side. Indonesian to be exact.

In many of my videos, I mentioned that the largest physical media distributor closed its door back in 2015, and the remaining distributors soon follow. The last time I purchased physical media from an actual authorized store was back in 2019 [last one from unauthorized store was back in 2021, but no new movies, all were old stocks from early-mid 2000s]. I can firmly say that physical media is practically dead in Indonesia, though it’s still very much alive as a whole. You probably know the famous Indonesian movie “The Raid”. It’s available on Blu-ray internationally. But from its initial release to this day, after over 10 years, I have NEVER, not even once, seen someone I know personally purchased The Raid on any kind of physical media.

In the US, it’s normal for a studio to do a “Remastering” or “Restoration” process to its beloved and critically acclaimed movies. Those movies then went to exclusive DVDs, Blu-ray, and UHD Blu-ray. Such thing never happened in Indonesia. This trailer is the proof of it. The studios remastered their acclaimed movies in HD, but those movies never came to Blu-ray and DVD. Those were exclusive for Streaming.

In 2023, Disney stopped physical media in Australia. I was not as surprised because Disney stopped the release of physical media in Indonesia way back in 2017—The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast live action were some of the last titles ever released on discs in Indonesia. Then in 2022, Disney teamed up with Indonesian government’s owned internet service provider to add Disney+ as a bundle. Naturally, most Indonesian can sign up and subscribe to Disney+ in a very easy, cheap, and convenient way. Afterwards, no one bothers to look back.

Many of the “remastered” Indonesian films such as featured in this trailer are very important and “Collectible”. As a collector myself, I really hope that there could be special packages reserved for these movies. That can allow other collectors from other nations to collect these Indonesian movies as well, and look behind the scenes to see their impacts. Sadly, that’ll probably never happened. If, say, Indonesian studios give me or someone a task to curate these movies and release them for collectors, I’d be more than happy to participate. Count me in. But I don’t think that will happen, at least not anytime soon.

The last major disc release of Indonesian movie was back in 2016 with the release of “Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2” on DVD. And of course, it was a terrible release, poor quality disc, poor quality features, and no Blu-ray release whatsoever. I hope this can help you better understand of how difficult it has become, to be a physical media collector in Indonesia.

So, that’s for the context. Thanks a lot, Folks!
