My ENTIRE Photography Workflow | Beginner Photography Tutorial

I go through my photography workflow all the way from taking to selling my photos.
See my photography on IG at @brendanvanson.
My photography workflow is definitely a process. It's not something that happens quickly, and it's a bit methodical. But, it's something that needs to be done. And, it's something that needs to be done right or else you can risk losing your photos. In this photography vlog, I walk you through my entire workflow from start to finish.
Any photography workflow starts with taking the picture. But, there's so much more to photography than simply taking the images. It's then about storage, about backing up on the cloud, and about selling the photos.
My photography niche is travel, so my workflow is slightly different to others, but I think this works for most people.
To give a bit of a beginner photography tutorial, in short my sequence is: taking the photos, transferring the files, editing the photos, keywording, exporting JPEGs, backing up and filing images, backing up on the cloud, and then sending off to clients.
This is a bit of a beginner photography tutorial, but I think there are tips in there for even pros.
If you like the tutorials, let me know. And, if you have idea for future photography tutorials, let me know in the comments what you'd like to see.
Tomorrow, I'm back to vlogging. I'm heading out for a bit of sunrise photography.

Hi Brendan - Thanks for another great video! I'd been a commercial product photographer since the 80's and am currently doing video production for a small cable company. I love landscape/travel photography and I shoot a lot! The problem has always been my organizational skills! Thanks for the information - I'm going to give your workflow a shot.

Very informative, , I'm looking forward to seeing you preparing for your exhibition. It'll be interesting seeing your thought process on how your going to display, what size you're going to display, what paper you choose and how you go about printing. For me, the most exciting and rewarding moment is seeing your photographs as an object.

"Getting all the value out of your images", that's the greatest advice ever regarding the commercial side of photography! Thanks!!

awesome post Brendan.
Can you come up with a video explaining your editorial process side of things when working on travel photos PLEASE.
I'm sure many of us have some gems sitting in the HD that can fund months of ones mortgage.

Hi Brendan - i shall admit that i found your video through Thomas Heaton's channel but I'm very glad I did. I really enjoy your open and honest style. Both yourself and Thomas are really inspiring me at the moment :)

2:30 If you choose 'import/copy as dng' or w/e it saves your LR edits in the file too - very important re: manual backups

Something I don't think you mentioned Brendan which is important about the edits in Lightroom being applied to your RAW files on the external drive. I mention it because this can catch a lot of photographers out, particularly if they lose their Lightroom catalogue or copy RAW files from one place to another.

The edit adjustments are not saved automatically on the drive, you need to set up Lightroom to save the .xmp files (which contain the Lightroom edit adjustments) to apply to your RAW files on the disc. If you don't then you won't have your "edited" photos for a later date unless you have exported them separately from Lightroom or saved them from Photoshop as jpg, tiff, dng or PSD etc.

Having the .xmp file also allows Lightroom or Photoshop to adjust the RAW photos at a later date based on what you already have adjusted. And importantly if you want to copy your RAW files to another location then also copy across the .XMP file with it otherwise you'll only have an untouched RAW file.

Besides the above point, another useful video Brendan. Thank you.

Thanks for making this video Brendan! This is one of the most helpful tutorials I have watched. The details about how you chased editorial work and the specifics of your stock photo strategies were particularly helpful. Thank you for taking time to record and post these insights into your business model.

Hi Brendan, i hope you dont have to repeat this question. How about health insurance and bank acounts to travel all year arround.
Do you need something speacial or announce to the companys that you are going away.
Im asking becouse i dont think its the same to announce a short holiday trip, to travel full time.

Cheers

Hey Brendan, loved the info! Would you please do a video on your travel photo editing. You stated that the majority of it is in Lightroom. I would love to see a couple of start to finish examples of how you process for sale. Thanks!
