This is a video in my Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on the French Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne's work, the Essays, and specifically on his essay "On Liars" (Des Menteurs). It discusses the distinction between lying and telling falsehoods, why lying is a particularly bad vice, how to catch liars, and why people who want to lie need good memories

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

I knew someone who lied habitually. In beginning I thought they have hard time trusting people so they can't open up. But later I realized they lied even about smallest and silliest things. Eventually I had to cut that person make it really difficult to reach people and be in relationship with them. I feel liars lose a lot by lying. Little random things popped into my mind after watching the video. Thank you prof. for the work you do!!
