The iPhone's mic vs the Zoom H5 field recorder. I thought this would be useful to those who use their phone as an audio recorder and want to know how much better a dedicated audio recorder sounds.

Mark my words: one day your channel will take off :) the videos are very well constructed. Maybe that aputure gear will be the breakthrough ;) just keep at it bro 💪🏼

Should I get the Zoom H5 if I am using wireless lav mic? Or should I plug wireless lav mic into my iPhone?

Hi, do you have problem background hiss noise when using mic LR?

What does one expect?!?
Smartphone micros are MEMS capsules optimized for mono/voice/near sources, the X-Y-module are a another league.
It's quite like so many new-to-tech-users believe, the phones camera can compete to DSLRs or EVILs when it comes to complex situations.
Anyway, most Zoom H* can connect to smartphones and cameras either using USB (even to IOS with lightning-USB-adapter) and analog mic level (-30dB; most likely prob will be the reversed TRRS pinout), which several other recorder brands/models can't.

Still valid in 2021 thanks! I don’t think it’s worth the learning curve for me. I would rather improve my external microphone for the iPhone, and also learn to record voiceover straight onto my MacBook. I use a Sennheiser external mic at the moment but it’s not ideal for my voiceovers.

Do a external microphone test for both.

If you eq the iPhone you can add the low end that it lacks but the H5 does sound better because you can hear the low end.

Howdy Nate, the Zoom H5 sounded like it had a dB boost... a stonger and slightly more defined sound. However, I'm not sure I would pay the extra nor would I really like to lug around the extra equipment. So in the end, I will stay with the iPhone (with the Zoom Handy Record app) and a decent $20.00 plugin mic.

Is the H5 better than using the Shure mv88 with an iPhone?

Did you ever do a test running the mic to the zoom and right into the phone. Like a preamp. Do a test of direct to phone vs to a preamp first.

Do you know if this works with iPhone SE ?

Can you make a comparison between iphone mic and H5 mic with very loud music/environment? Looking forward to see the H5 performance in a band practice room while recording our jams with loud amps, PAs and drums...I wonder how it handles high levels of volume and distortion. Cheers!

Hi, , i have a question..did you edit the audio in this video ? I mean post editing such as giving reverb or compressor in computer, , because i hear a lot of better differences on the audio from h5, ,

I have an iPhone and I just bought the Zoom H5. I've never compared the two but I'm happy that you didn't tell me the iPhone is better. Thanks for making me feel even better about buying the Zoom!
