That was a good discussion. Like so many careers, employers want experienced employees and don't want to train them. Creating an entry level (i.e. no experience required) job that is engaging enough to keep people learning and growing while also providing enough benefit for the company to justify the expense is a difficult line to walk. That gets even harder when someone wants to jump straight something like penetration testing. Basic cybersecurity skills are built on a mountain of fundamental IT understanding.

I'm definitely one of those service members (10 years of serving my country) who reskilled to get into cyber and got hundreds of rejections :/ still trying and applying but yeah those rejections are tough. I always run into the experience issue and then I explain that I have training no experience I am trying to get experience and I get rejected :( I made a whole website portfolio and spruced up my LinkedIn and hopefully, that will help me get a job.

I'm just starting my cyber security path and they cover a lot of great topics. At the moment I'm looking for the right program or course to learn and it can be very hard. Hopefully it won't be so hard to get a decent job when I'm ready.

LoL have my BS in Cyber as well as higher certs and having to do an App Sys Admin job as a contractor to get my foot in the door before I can go cyber. It's probably something of a waste of time and talent but what can ya do?
