In this video series "How to get started in game development", we've broken down the process of how to get started creating video games into 7 easy to follow steps:
◆ STEP 3 - Hardware - What Kind Of Computer Do You Need To Make Games?

► When you're first getting into game development, you don't need the most powerful computer. Many inexpensive desktops or laptops will be enough to run many of the applications you'll need to get started.

As time progresses, & your skills & work get more advanced to the point you've outgrown your current hardware, buying more expensive equipment, computers, or parts is far more justified than buying them on the fronted.

But we've broken down the hardware into two different PC builds:

The first is a cheaper machine, mainly for the purpose of developing 2D games using Unity, Game Maker, or a 2D game engine.

The second, is a PC built mainly for 3D development in Unity or Unreal Engine.

But even if you plan on developing high end 3d games with unreal, you can purchase a computer for less than what you'd pay for a Playsation 5.

► The 7 steps to "How to get started in game development", are:
◆ Passion & dedication
◆ Idea & concept
◆ Hardware
◆ Picking & learning a game engine
◆ Programming & Scripting
◆ Art tools & Software
◆ Sound tools & software

Even if you have a high end workstation for asset creation n prototyping, the programming n testing itself is better on something more mid range cause then you will early on optimize code n assets to meet a low to mid range average configration. Its much more efficient to test a game in low specs n see if its running smoothly, then you can keep adding high resolution meshes n textures to meet higher graphics settings. if the gameplay is conssitent, its easier to create ports for handhelds n consoles this way.

4 cores is the minimum requirement for running games. For game development I would suggest 6+ cores since it has to work the Game Engine and Text Editor. For RAM, 8 GB is also the bare minimum with 16 the recommended for up to medium2large projects and 32 for anything else. As for the graphics card, it can be done on an iGPU, for 2D games, but it really depends on what the capacity of it is. Not to mention, with the iGPU you will probably have to do extensive optimizing every minor update.

My Go-To specs are 6+ core at 3.8GHz or higher, 16GB+ RAM, a 1-2 TB m.2 NVMe drive with at least 1000 MB/s (or an equivelant SSD), 3050 or equivelant

My recommended specs are for Medium Quality/Size 3D Games in Unity or Unreal engine. If you are an experienced maker, and want to make higher end games, I would recommend upgrading your graphics card as that is usually the bottleneck when it comes to games to a 3070 or equivalent (and, if necessary, the processor to an 8+ Core at 4.1GHz+)

I have a laptop with dual core cpu, igpu and 4 gb ram. Believe me it doesn't work. If I open unity I can't open visual studio because it starts lagging. I think you atleast need 4 core cpu, 8 gb ram and a gpu with 2 gb - 4 gb vram if you want to build beginner projects

These videos ALWAYS missn one main problem.

Its easy to SAY you don't need a powerful computer. And while yes you don't need a 10k machine that's over built....but even if you want to just LEARN and follow tutorials....you need a device capable of actually running it.

I.e. I have a 2017 laptop with a standalone internal 670m. 12 gb og ram.. it will RUN unreal....but I can't really use it. Its so slow with any kind of rendering its almost impossible to "follow tutorials".

So if you're SERIOUS about learning game dev. On any kind of real engine, yes you need a computer to run it and minimum requirements aren't going to cut it

I'd just like a list of laptops at different prices

do you think gtx 1050 is enough for game development?

I mean yes your video is great! But I'm a teenager and my main source of income will be game dev. When you say that if my game is too heavy to run on my current device and I should look for a more expensive one where do I find the money to accomplish that? My parents can't help me because I live in a place where economical crises strikes and i'm only 16 to find a job outside in the world. I appreciate your time for reading this comment and I hope you can give me a little advice about how to get started.

Note : I mentioned my age because I live in europe and there are some age policies.

this is a terrible video. there's a ton of fluff, and almost no content. reading system specs on game engines adds nothing to a video
