I can confirm people euthanizing other people’s pets is, unfortunately, painfully common

Edit: I wanna mention that in the area I live we get a lot of people who try to euthanize pets that aren’t their directly, but 9/10 times its due to the animal being really sick or dying and the actual owner is a family member or a friend that can’t or couldn’t be there. My clinic specifically has only had a handful of pet owners that have tried to euthanize an animal for bogus reasons and we always turn them down, but that’s not to say they won’t try to find another vet or take the animal out themselves. I’m speaking purely on personal experience having worked in this field for almost 5 years and in my area specifically. My clinic has a very strict protocol should the pet being presented does not belong to that person. It’s almost always a family member bringing the pet in due to the owner unable to be present, which we then have to get verbal consent over the phone or get a power of attorney involved to keep things legal.

I can’t speak for other vets but I have heard of quite a few clinics that will euthanize indiscriminately, because remember, at the end of the day, when you work with human beings you never know what they are going to do.

My GFs cat got sick, long story short all organs were in good state, it was far from incureable, but her mother was stressed out about having a sick animal and put the cat down before trying anything else.

Worst part is she is acting as if it was some great mercy towards the cat (who was young btw) sparing her from pain( the only pain the cat ever vocalized was after the mother forced the cat to eat), even tho the only reason she did it was for herself.

I hate her for that.
And I hate that Ibwas in no position to do anything about it.
