Firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population (NIOSH). Firefighters have 100% increased risk (Double the Risk) of getting mesothelioma and a 62% risk of getting esophageal cancer and a 39% increased risk of dying from esophageal cancer (NIOSH).
