Duck Hunt was released as an arcade game in the Nintendo VS. series as Vs. Duck Hunt in April 1985, and was later included in the PlayChoice-10 arcade console a year later. The console supports two light guns, allowing two players at once.

The dog's character design in this game reminded me of Tex Avery/MGM cartoons.

if you shot the dog he said "Ouch!! Shoot the Ducks, not me" in Bonus Stage.

This game is based on a 1976 electronic toy version titled Beam Gun: Duck Hunt, part of the Laser Clay Shooting System Beam Gun series.

This is basically a HARDER version of Duck Hunt. You have a Gun Life Meter at the bottom-left of the screen, and every time you miss a single target, your Gun Life Meter goes down. Lose all gun lives, and it's game over.

Duck Hunt is one of the few Nintendo franchises to never have a sequel.

A guy is making a new lightgun called Sinden. It doesn't need calibration and works on LCDs and CRTs

The arcade version of Duck Hunt has many differences compared to the NES version. It has more animations, a slightly different palette and zero game modes. Instead the game starts with the duck hunting game (with multiple ducks, just like Game B on the NES version), the second stage is the clay pigeon shooting game (the dog makes an appearance if you miss), a bonus stage follows where you can shoot lots of ducks for bonus points (as an even bigger bonus you can shoot the dog to make him appear with a cast and crutches and yell at you), then both levels and bonus repeat again followed by an intermission (called "Break Time") where the dog is chasing a duck.

I love this game, I thought there was a way to calibrate it to make the iron sights accurate.

MAME's zapper emulation for NES/VS/Playchoice-10 has always been pretty bad. Try it again in 0.241. I'm pretty sure some of your misses were due to bad emulation. The "slow" name entry thing where you had to wait for it to change color was also an emulation bug.

I'm curious how people with light guns will find the improvements as I only have a mouse to test with. Any feedback is appreciated, but hopefully it now "just works" and without any mysterious "my crosshair was right in the middle of that giant Hogan's Alley sprite but I still missed" moments.

EDIT: Hadn't made it all the way to the end. 10:41 hitting duck on opposite side of screen shouldn't happen any more either.
