Pier Perspectives | Ocean Lifeguard Academy #37

Piers are some of the most heavily trafficked beach areas in the @countyofla and while they do provide a great place to gather to view the ocean and its surrounding area, there are some inherent risks that are also associated with them. Swimming along side piers is prohibited by Lifeguards due to the hazards that pilings pose and the ocean conditions that commonly coincide with these structures. This includes:
1. Deep Inshore holes that are created as ocean currents and waves move past pier pilings.
2. Rip currents regularly form utilizing the deep inshore holes to move water near the shore back to sea.
3. Concrete pier pilings accumulate jagged mussel & shellfish which can cause serious injury when making contact with them.

When visiting the beach near piers, always pay attention to flags & signage that is posted and be sure to check in with the Lifeguard for the best areas to swim!
