We often see the sarcastic moments of Ryan Reynolds, the actor of Deadpool, and in this video, we talk about how to use sarcasm without looking like a jerk. Sarcasm is one of the toughest types of humor to pull off. When executed improperly, it can leave people angry at you as often as it leaves them laughing. So in this video, we are going to take a look at the king of sarcasm, Ryan Reynolds, a.k.a. Deadpool.

So how do you use sarcasm without leaving people angry or hurt? Well, if you're going to do it it cannot be a one-off potshot; otherwise, it feels like a pointed attack. So getting in the habit of joking all the time even in semi serious moments helps signal to others that your statements are usually to be taken in jest. We also talked about this at length in our video on Chris Pratt so check it out as well!

Quick summary of the 4 types of sarcasm used by Ryan Reynolds (but not Deadpool):
1. Joke "all the time" (daily and often), so people know that's part of your personality, and they won't have to guess when you're being sarcastic.
2. Lower your brain filters to add specific (random or crazy) words or phrases to your humor.
3. Make yourself the target of your joke.
4. When you make others the target of your joke, make it so absurd that they can't possibly be offended!

This actually helps me. I have a long history of killing it with sarcasm. And by killing it, I mean killing social relations.

My issue is that when I'm sarcastic I speak too monotone and people think I'm serious, but I feel like if I exaggerate my tone I'll feel too cheesy

I think it's illegal how much charismatic Ryan is. I don't think he even acts anymore, he just exists in front of a camera and everyone loves it :D.

Maybe sarcasm is a different thing on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

As A brit, we learnt this when we were babies, forged in the fires of sarcasm, like a less badass Bane with a cup of tea in hand maybe a crumpet if we're feeling spicy.

I find myself using sarcasm often when I'm in a situation where I feel a bit threatened or isn't totally relaxed. It works quite good to ease the tension, both for myself and the group. But the downside is that when I do this in a new group of people, I also lock myself in to being that kind of person. I know it's all in my head, but I think I subconsciously feel inauthentic if I switch personality. It's like l paint myself into a corner, even though I hate being too sarcastic.

I can also relate to this being-a-in- a-certain-way dilemma when it comes to hanging out with old friends. I often don't enjoy that as much as with new friends. I've changed so much lately, but it's my old me that runs the show when I'm in the context where old me are used to being.

Thanks for all the great stuff,

/Alex
