Psychoacoustics came long before Dolby Athmos. They made experiments with a stereo process, that is in fact binaural, recorded with an artificial head (dummy head), what has microphones in the ears and produce over headphones a 2 ½ D sound (I call it so, because you can't locate things in front of you), continued with enhancers like Aphex Exciter and SPL Vitalizer what restores high frequencies by recreating harmonics or boosting by phase shift. Later came the rear speaker emulation with RSS or Q Sound, what could also turn dummy head binaural into 3D stereo.

Bose has been applying psychoacoustics for decades. I remember ages ago and people would put them down for that and having DSP controllers for speakers. Now, every manufacturer has them.
