Migraine is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring headaches that can be moderate to severe in intensity. Migraine attacks are often accompanied by various symptoms, and one of the common features is an aura.

The migraine aura is a reversible neurological phenomenon that usually occurs before the onset of a migraine headache. It is experienced as a range of sensory disturbances that can affect vision, but in some cases, it may also affect other senses such as touch, smell, or hearing. Visual disturbances are the most common type of aura and can include:

1. Visual phenomena: These can include flashing or flickering lights, zigzag lines, shimmering or sparkling lights, blind spots, or temporary loss of vision.

2. Sensory disturbances: Some people may experience tingling or numbness in their face, hands, or other parts of the body.

3. Language and speech problems: Auras can sometimes affect language abilities, leading to difficulty speaking or finding the right words.

4. Motor symptoms: Rarely, auras can cause temporary muscle weakness or difficulty with coordination.

It's important to note that not all individuals with migraines experience aura, and some people may only experience migraines without aura. Additionally, the duration and intensity of aura symptoms can vary among individuals.

The exact cause of migraines, including the aura, is not fully understood. However, it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Migraine triggers can vary from person to person and may include factors such as stress, certain foods, hormonal changes, sleep disturbances, and sensory stimuli (like bright lights or loud noises).

In most cases, the visual aura of migraines typically disappears when a person closes their eyes. Visual auras are usually experienced as temporary disturbances in vision, which can include various visual symptoms such as flashing lights, zigzag lines, blind spots, or shimmering patterns. These symptoms often precede or accompany the headache phase of a migraine attack.

The visual disturbances of a migraine aura are generally related to abnormal electrical activity in the brain, specifically the visual cortex. When the eyes are closed, the input to the visual cortex is reduced, and this can lead to the resolution of the visual symptoms.

How's your experience with migraines? Does it happen with an Aura or not? How do you treat them?
My experience with Occipital Neuralgia in the link 🔗 it can be mistaken for a migraine if it's unilateral..

This… I’ve… I’ve always had this. I tried explaining it to my eye doctor as visual snow and she looked at me like I was crazy… I thought the migraine aura was supposed to be like the silent migraine tear/fissure but constantly… 🫠🫠
