Only one American President, Franklin Roosevelt, has served more than two terms in office, and the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1951, has limited presidents to two terms ever since.

But what about before that? How many Presidents have run for a third term? Well, technically four.

80 years after George Washington first set the two-term precedent, Ulysses Grant was the first to BREAK that tradition…first by considering running for a third term in the election of 1876 and then later ACTUALLY running for a third term in the election of 1880. He didn’t even get nominated, however.

Next up was Theodore Roosevelt, who ran for a third term in the crazy election of 1912. He lost. Next was Woodrow Wilson, who wanted a third term but his own political party wouldn’t let him run. And Harry Truman, the last President eligible to run for a third term, was highly unpopular at the time and dropped out of the race early.

That said, Teddy Roosevelt and Truman only served PARTIAL first terms due to Presidents dying in office, so their third runs were understandable.

And now Trump is running for President...for the fourth time.

Teddy may have lost the election of 1912, but he got second place, which is impressive for someone running as a third-party member.

Had Teddy secured the Republican nomination in 1912, it’s almost certain he would have won. It’s simple when you think about it but at the same time it’s crazy to think how close we were to a Teddy third term

Lyndon B. Johnson also considered running for a third term in 1968 before dropping out after a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary. He was eligible to run for a third term because he only served part of his first term, due to John F. Kennedy's assassination.

to be honest, I think Washington had the right idea in bowing out after two terms. It's always good to have some fresh eyes on something. If you living in DC long enough, you get locked in that bubble.

While you can be elected to to two four-year terms, the maximum time for a president is _ten_ years.

The crazy thing is FDR would have served four if he hadn’t died early on in his fourth

Teddy Roosevelt's campaign is notable for him getting shot during a speech and basically going "Oh no. Anyway..."

I would have assumed that Wilson's stroke would have ended any realistic possibility of him running for a third term. Had he sufficiently recovered by 1920 that he could have run?

Essentially bedridden for nearly a year at that point due to a stroke and still hoped to be nominated for a third term?? Pretty crazy.
Also, Teddy planned on running in 1920 as well, but died in 1919.

Woodrow Wilson had also been on the edge about running again (even though he wanted to) due to declining health

It's almost crazy to think how long the Democrats remained in power, mainly due to FDR. I'd just imagine how crazy it would have been if Eisenhower decided to run as a democrat, as both parties wanted him to run for their party.
