Us in the military lovingly refer to that as Knife Hands. Ask anyone fresh out of boot how powerful knife hands are. LOL 😆

Anybody who has been in the US military in the last couple of decades if not more will disagree with you about pointing with your whole hand being less threatening. We call it the knife hand and when properly applied by someone who is well versed in the art of "harsh words and sign language" it is the most intimidating hand gesture in the US Department of Defense.

As a professional speaker for over 36 years, I will disagree with the pointing aspect. But, then it may be all upon the presenter. I'm a very big man and when I point that becomes threatening to the point that they forget what I'm saying. But a lowering out of the hand palm upward brings a more sense of ease to the audience (from a large intimidating man). Your size can dictate your animations when speaking.
