I understand the sentiments about a top athlete going out with fan fare however this is not aligned with the reality of sports and being an athlete. It is actually not the norm that an athlete predetermines and plans their 'retirement'. When Michael Jordan played his last game is Chicago he had no idea that may have been his last game. The break up of the team caused it to be his last game. Two years later he was able to unretire and play for the Wizards. To step in the shoe of a pro athlete where track and field is their livelihood, no athlete wants to declare a year in advance that they will retire especially when they are capable, they have earning potential and they have done this for many years. Note, once a top tier athlete retires, that's it, it's not easy to unretire and so the decision and timing should be left 100% to the athlete who has to live with this decision for the rest of their lives and absolutely no consideration should be placed on anyone else to determine how that athlete should retire.
For many athletes, it's injuries or inability to perform that makes the decision for them because it's not an easy decision to go from being a regimented machine to a normal human.
