Remove Stuck Lower Unit | Mercruiser, Alpha 1 - Gen 1

How to remove a stuck lower unit. I put a new engine in the boat and I need to change the impeller. The lower unit would not come off. Third time is a charm. This is how I did it. I made this video because in every other video I watched about changing the impeller, their lower unit was either already removed, or it came off easy. Mine was a bitch to separate. I did not want to beat on it or ply on it. The housing is aluminum and I definitely did not want to mess anything up. This worked great for me. Again. This is my first time, but I figured out a great way to do it and I hope this helps you too.

Please like, subscribe, and share. All that good stuff. Thank you for watching.

Thank you very much. I never thought about using the nuts to force it off. I am going to use your technique today!

Just did this on my Merc 150, lower unit was refusing to come off (Salt water used). We repowered our boat 2 years ago with this (used 2014)) motor with 240 hours, pretty sure it had never been off before. Your "washer" trick worked beautifully. Super thankful you shared this. Saved us lord knows how much $$$. A+

Thanks to you I got the lower unit out. The washer wedge idea is ingenious! Thanks a million 👍

Using the nits to jack the pieces apart is the best trick. Way better than beating and wedging.

We used washers nuts and a sockets but got stymied where there wasn’t a bolt to work with. Bought two mini machinist jacks from Amazon that fit between the fins for $24 bucks. It worked. Lots of PB Blaster marination and patience helped too

Good tricks. Thanks! I had the same problem and this method worked. I used a relatively thick pocket knife instead of putty knives on the aft end.

I and having the same problem, but used a 18” board with a 45° angle, putting the board along the cavitation plate, and banged on the wood a few times on one side then the other….but now it’s only 1” apart and I can’t get it to separate more. I think the shaft gear thing is stuck
