Show is New Amsterdam. Season 4 episode 4. She took a bunch of skin lightening pills because she felt a lot of pressure from being in an all-white community and being adopted by a white family. Everyone brushed off her concerns about being treated differently so much that the stress bubbled over and she took the pills to try to look like everyone else in her community

I can explain for anyone confused:
Basically, she was treated as if she weren’t a part of the dance team because of her skin color. This made her get a bunch of skin lightening pills and she took a ton of them at one time to make them “work faster”. This is why she said she wasn’t black since she was embarrassed of her skin. The pills caused her to end up here (this is also why people thought it was a suicide attempt).

I did a term paper on sickle cell disease in high school. The fascinating thing is that it is the gene that protects melanated people from malaria in hot climates. Since we’ve migrated to climates that don’t reach as high temperatures the gene mutated. Main reason it’s known as a predominately black disease.
