Not in mine. Prefer the NRSVue, which starts out "When God began to create...." just like Dan points out here.

Things like this are yet another reason why the inerrancy crowd SHOULD be interested in having the most accurate and up to date translation possible. The fact that they so vociferously object speaks volumes.

Yes, the Genesis account is about terraforming a pre-existing Earth in order to make it habitable for man.
The Church of God has always known & preached this.

But what does this mean?
4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding.
5 Who has laid the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line upon it?
6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
(Job 38)

Clearly Dan is one that does not have this understanding & is unable to declare.

There are midrashes that state 1) This creation is one of many cycles 2) God looked in the Torah to create the earth. Both presuppose "things" existing before this description of creation.

Great video on a topic I have long struggled with. Can you recommend the most accurately translated version of the Bible please? Every version I have read contains errors, and I would like to better understand if there is indeed an accurate edition.

I think John 1 and II Maccabees are approaching De Novo creation. But the Hebrew Bible stuff certainly does not have that. That was just not a concern before the Hellenistic period.

What about the use of “the gods” rather than “god”? I thought that Hebrew word was plural as well?

Dan, I'm still completely mystified that you could remain a faithful member of the LDS Church after your vast educational experiences. I think everyone would be interested in hearing how you hold onto that faith. What is it about the story of Joseph Smith and his revelations that you find convincing? I can't imagine that you would simply pretend to be a devout member of the Church, there must be some foundation for it. I'm more than willing to listen, and I think others would as well.

IIRC, what's translated as "God" there is "Elohim", the plural of "El"... because the earliest Jews were, like everyone around them, not strictly monotheistic in practice, though, again like everyone else, they definitely had their favorite.
