Totoro protects kids and in the movie mei and her sister saw him he was kind never a monster he only smile and say a small kind of sad story of totoro is he used to love being seen in the forest by travellers or other types of people but a man came and he chopped down the trees to build a village then totoro became scared (btw he’s called a spirit in the forest) but mei saw him while he was sleeping just watch the movie my hands are dead already from writing this…

Don’t think like that before watching . There were no monster or bad spirit . And the main character are mei and satsuki I have watch the movie twice is very nice and best recommend.
Also the totoro is very lonely that’s why totoro don’t smile at the end is a happy ending
