Bubbles Freezing in Slow Motion

Slow motion video of bubbles freezing on a cold (16 °F / -9 °C) January 2017 morning in Arvada, Colorado.

While trying to photograph freezing bubbles, I recorded video of some of my attempts to create and place the bubbles. More often than not, the bubbles break right away. This video contains a few of the successful attempts.

I recorded the video at twice the playback rate resulting in half-speed slow motion. Because the bubbles freeze so quickly (usually under 30 seconds), I prefocused the camera and tried to place the bubbles in the same spot.

It looks like little ferns growing in soft white skies. Like silver feathers floating down from birds perched upon trees or flying high. Large crystal forests growing from the ground up. Large snowflakes making a bigger snowflake.

Truly fantastic how one's imagination and flow like a pen on paper over one simple video of a bubble freezing in slow-motion.

It has always surprised us to see how a bubble freezes. Obviously you can see how frost forms in soap bubbles in this variation but in some cases the bubble pops just before setting into the snow and ice. Always a pleasure.
