I think it's not the alcohol that actually haram, but in Quran it says not to to drink or eat something that can intoxicated you or make you drunk

Simple rule: If it intoxicates you in large amounts then it is haram both in large and small amounts. If it doesn't Intoxicates you in large amounts as in the case of orange juice, banana etc, then it's halal.

You drink 5L of orange juice, you ain't gonna get drunk. That ain't khamr. You drink a few glasses of beer and you gonna be tipsy. That's khamr.

Yes, sir you're right. Actually the medicines that we use today also have small percentage of alcohol in them but many people don't understand this concept.

As an alcoholic, I’m offended that you’ve called OJ an alcoholic beverage

Its almost impossible to avoid food containing alcohol. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If a large amount of anything causes intoxication, a small amount of it is prohibited.

So you can enjoy your favourite sweets, your favourite condiment sauces, and your favourite cakes, icecreams etc because it wont intoxicate you

We have this thing called "tape" and "peuyeum" here in Indonesia. They are gelatinous rice and cassava, respectively, that are fermented to become sweet. They are a little bit alcoholic, you can definitely feel the numbing, but you'll need to eat maybe 100 pounds of it for you to get drunk. So it's never really been questioned as halal or haram. All about the intent and actual intoxication i suppose

Intent is also always a factor to sin or not to sin.

As a Catholic I always respect the devotion of a Muslim man. In a world of temptation and sin its always refreshing to see others who Still have their hearts aimed towards God. Whether our beliefs differ in a few areas at the end of the day we all worship the same God.

i tried telling a classmate that white wine vinegar was fine to cook with, but they said no because it had wine in the name. meanwhile they were eating freshly baked bread that you could literally smell the yeast from

The true definition is “كل شراب اسكر" which means whatever gets you drunk

I learned about "niyyah" or intention recently and it really explains a lot of situations.

Even if any fruit juices claims that it contains alcohol, my intention is very clear; i.e. I want to drink the juice. If any naughty friends wants to prank me and adds a little bit more alcohol in my juice without me knowing, my intention is still clear; i.e. I want to drink the juice.

However, 2 things will happen.
1. I can smell the alcohol, therefore I avoid it.
2. I can't smell it, and drank it, and I got drunk (maybe, maybe not).
If no. 2 happens, I could be forgiven, because I don't know. At the bottom of my heart and knowledge, I do not know. The sin now lies on my naughty friend because his intention was to make me take something haram.

Why did I bother to explain this? Because the producer of all these fruit juice DOES NOT intend to make alcoholic fruit juices. And if everything have been inspected and certified by the Islamic authority (i.e. the ingredient, the additives, the process of harvesting, collecting, storing, cutting, everything until packaging and selling), then there shouldnt be any doubt. If anyone decides to go with self doubt, then so be it, perhaps it is better for him.

there was a whole debate across the Islamic world centuries ago on whether vinegar was halal or not

Seriously though, in the end the answer is depends where you live, what the culture is, and what imam words you want to follow. I lived in Indonesia and I practically given up on this rule and said 'yolo' if the problem become too complex.
