Shawn Colvin - Live at Paradiso Amsterdam (June 17, 2007) [Full Concert]

In 2007 I played the great Paradiso venue in Amsterdam. Unbeknownst to me, the whole concert was filmed and I just found it. Watched it from start to finish.

I’m real proud of this show. Getting filmed can be so weird - for me anyway. It’s hard to feel free, get in a groove, and be vulnerable, all the while knowing that every vocal miss or guitar flub is gonna live on forever. Plus, the chance of spit that tends to fly out of your mouth when you sing what’s true and what’s hard. That’ll live on, too.

Now. I was going through a rough patch when I did that show, mourning a truly doomed romance. One I could not let go of. One of those drag-along-forever breakups. Somebody has to pull the trigger, and nobody can bring themselves to do it.

But here’s the upside!

This is a good concert because I wasn’t trying to perform, to please. I was stripped of artifice and of the wish to “wow” everyone. I was inside the songs, healing myself, not focused on impressing you. I was defeated and sad and broken. I wasn’t a performer. I was fully myself. No stories. No jokes.

Man, that Paradiso crowd filled me up, alright. I swear, they were RAPT. The rest of the show was effortless. That’s rare. They listened intently. They were moved, I could tell.

So I played and played and played. No set list, no agenda. The Paradiso filled me up till I forgot all about my broken heart. In that hour and a half I was whole, and I was buoyed and yeah - loved. It was more than enough. See what you think. 🎶

Truly beautiful! I can't imagine how much courage it takes to sing all alone to an audience for 90 minutes, no other musicians to hide behind.

Shawn is so " at one" with her guitar. Perfect delivery.

I’m happy to read there was an upside, Shawn. May you be well/healthy and happy now. Thanks for posting this show. (Side note: I wish we were as respectful at shows here in the states. I often hear too much chatter from audience members during quiet sets like this).

Awesome! Thanks Shawn!
<edit> Oh wow, I wasn’t done watching and the “awesome” seems tepid now! Ricochet in Time! Holy smokes! And are you kidding me, Killing The Blues?!?! Hurts, with our John now gone.

Been a fan for ages - Saw the Beacon Theater show in 1998(?) the year A FEW SMALL REPAIRS won the Grammy. Steuart Smith & John Lenthal on guitars - Just about the best show I have ever seen (and I've seen many!). When Shawn Pelton joined for the encores, it blew the roof off the hall! Thanks Shawn C... you're a national treasure.

I've seen Shawn Colvin a few times and was always blown away. She's an amazing guitar player. Listen for the muting and at all the hammer-on's! She makes a 'C and G chord' sound great!

Ah, The Paradiso. I was but a young girl of 18 when I traveled on my own to Amsterdam and visited this club one summer night in the early 1970's.
I heard about this club and took the tram from my hotel Lots of young people my age and some in their 20's. I don't think anyone well known was performing (or anyone I knew of) but I do remember sitting on the floor, a large stage there and many different performers, from folk to folk/rock were performing that night. Many people smoking pot around me (I was not though), but it was a large room, dark and no seats. No one standing, just everyone sitting on the hard wood floor for hours. I remember hearing some great singers that night. It was a fun and memorable evening for an 18 year old girl....so long ago and far away.

This is as good as it gets. I’ve seen Shawn close to 40 times since April ‘88 at the Somerville Theater, but I’m sorry that I missed this show! A superb recording of an artist in one of her finest moments.

We saw and enjoyed you around ten times over the years. Wouldn't mind to see you another ten times. All the best to you. By the way, I hope that Fat City will be released on vinyl one day. I even think that we saw you in Cologne around this time at the Prime Club or Luxor (same venue which changed its name for a while).
