Have you ever considered the fragility of life? How would you respond, if all your dreams and aspirations appeared futile, in the wake of a trauma entirely unique to you?

In this TEDx Talk, James Wells highlights how we can all harness courage from our everyday lives to overcome adversity with a growth mindset, however challenging a situation might feel from the outset. He relates his own inspiring story to us from angles intended to alter our perception of hardship and encourage us to adopt a positive perspective when confronted with difficult or devastating circumstances.

This talk was given at TEDxMaidMarianWay using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

An elite athlete, entrepreneur and cancer survivor, James Wells received a Leukaemia diagnosis at the height of athletic prowess as an international martial artist. His powerful message teaches you how to reach peak performance by optimising your full potential, even in the most extreme circumstances.

After battling Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) - enduring 11 rounds of chemotherapy, 6 sessions of total body radiotherapy and 300 nights in a hospital bed - he was told he’d never compete again. Severe lung damage from brutal treatment meant an early retirement beckoned… But James refused to quit!

Defying science, odds and even the greatest expectations, he fought and won medals for England less than 18 months after a stem cell transplant saved his life.
