MONOPOLY. A game everyone loves to hate. The history behind MONOPOLY, starting at the turn of the 20th century, is a wild story in and of itself.

It includes the works of economist Henry George, an actress and inventor, copyright infringement, patent deception, lawsuits, depositions and games getting dumped in a landfill.

The history of MONOPOLY has it all!

DAMN, man, that single-take run of all the licensed Monopoly types is AMAZING.

I take it back, that closing soliloquy was amazing. I was genuinely touched. Beautifully done!

The irony in that it became the thing its prototype actually critizied.

I love whenever “Easily Solvable Mysteries” pops up.

I haven’t played a game of Monopoly in probably 40 years, but when I moved in 2023, I noticed I’d somehow accumulated at least a half-dozen iterations of it.

I have been married to my wonderful wife for 22 years. We played Monopoly one time 21 years ago. It’s still banned in our house even though we have 3 kids now.

My favourite version of Monopoly is the Hasbro 100th anniversary edition, a game previously owned by a company Hasbro absorbed wherein one can buy various properties previously owned by companies Hasbro absorbed. It really is the most meta version of the game.

"Steal Credit From a Woman Edition"... Don't think I didn't notice that one! Anyway, good on Anspach for eventually winning his lawsuit regarding Anti-Monopoly, and it's cool to see that University Press is keeping that game in production after his death in 2022. Almost makes one wish that The Landlord's Game was still being produced, if only to continue telling Monopoly/Hasbro to "shove it".

As a kid, I had both Monopoly and Anti-Monopoly 2. Anti-Monopoly had more jokes and funny jabs at Parker Bros. 😅

My Monopoly game came with an insert about the history of the game, but it was the fake history that credited Darrow and omitted Magie. I wonder why they did that.

At 17:20 - starting to feel the "We Didn't Start the Fire..." song running in my head....😄

For 40 years I have been confused about the spot Free Parking. Understanding now that it was originally representing public space makes so much more sense! Fuck this game!

That rant slash read starting at about 17:20 is carlinesque man, congrats on that alone.

You can tell that ad was targeting rookies. The utilities are usually money sinks.

One of the design faults of Monopoly is that (depending on how you interpret the term) there is no "win condition": you win by being the last player to _not lose._

Man, each episode you put out is a banger, but this was the best. RIP Lizzie

Not a single mention of the McDonalds Monopoly game (or the controversy that surrounded it in its early days). Hopefully that will be fuel for an additional video in the future. 🤞

The first ad I got when I watched this was for Monopoly on Switch because we live in hell

This story reminds us of one thing beyond everything else: that we need to care. We need to care about inequality and what we can do to join hands with and support our neighbors. Apathy is the death of hope, and without hope the landlords win. It's far better to support each other and oppose greed and selfishness. As long as we still care, the hope of a better world will never die.
