I passed mine for a 125cc two days ago and started riding that night it’s probably the best thing I have ever done.

I “failed” my CBT. The person examining me was being examined himself. Because I was using their bike, which they’d only bought the day before (some old as MT5 kinda bike, don’t remember the make or model) the guy actually said to me to please be careful I don’t go over 30 because when he rode it home yesterday it was getting up to 50mph. Obviously a moped is only allowed to go 30. so I’m driving along at exactly 30 on my speedo. He tells me to increase my speed to 30. So I go up to 35. He says again to increase my speed to 30. So I go up to 40. He says again can I go up to 30 so I get up to 45. When we got back to the test centre he regrettably informed me I was too hesitant and slow and he couldn’t issue me a certificate that day. I was absolutely fuming, but didn’t call him out in front of the person examining him. As soon as we were alone I pulled him to one side. Told him I was doing 30, 35, 40, 45. I could see the panic on his face. He’d let me do my CBT on an illegal bike, even if it wasn’t as fast as he thought the speedo was well out. He thanked me for not saying anything, told me to come back tomorrow and we’d get it sorted within an hour. When I arrived my certificate was written out waiting for me. I didn’t even get back on a bike. I just walked out with my certificate. Buzzing. By the time I got home there was 3 inches of freshly laid snow. Didn’t stop me tho. Had my little AR50 waiting and nothing was stopping me. Freedom was now mine. It did piss me off a year later as I had to wait an extra day for my full years no claims to insure my new chesterfield rs125 I had sat waiting to go.

So Glad that I did my test when I did. I had 2 days training and my test on the 3rd day. 7th, 9th and 11th of Jan 2013. These laws came into effect on the 19th January 2013 1 week from when I did my test. CBT at 16, went in to for full license at 17 and half; passed and got my 600cc at 19 and half. It was so simple. CBT -> Theory -> Full bike test -> ride any bike up to 33 kw or 250cc -> after 2 years ride any size bike you want with no restrictions.

I remember my instructor warning me just before I left to do my Mod 2 "just remember if you fail this, you can't do it again until you're 24!" as if I didn't have enough pressure on my own back of losing £900 if I failed 😂

I'm currently one year into my A2 and can't wait to get through another year to then do my A! I'll be able to legally ride Divs without her restrictor! 😂

Gotta love the USA did one weekend motorcycle class and got my full license lol. Probably wouldn’t even get a motorcycle license if I lived in the UK too much restriction.

Back in 1999 my mate 19 did his A2, bought an RGV 250 which was above the allowed power. The official restriction kit he got fitted to allow him to ride it was a tiny bit of bent metal 1mm thick, 8mm wide, maybe 40mm long. It had a hole drilled at one end, and a small posi drive screw. Basically a tiny bracket to restrict throttle movement that could be removed in seconds. Always made me chuckle. Obviously he removed it the second he got home.

A place near me charges £150 for a CBT and I'd say the average around here is £130

EU - you just got to ride 250 cc and up - that is it - but you need to practice and show that you can handle the bike at 18+ .UK is a bit divided ( good for youngster).

In 1987, when 16, I went in to get my driving license, after driving a car for a year on a learners permit. She asked "do you want a motorcycle endorsement"? I said "sure"; I've had it ever since.

As someone who travelled:
3000miles on a 50cc at 16 (CBT)
6000miles on a 125cc at 17 (CBT then A1)
1000 + miles on a 125cc at 18 (ongoing)
Im excited to do 4 more tests over 6 years of continuous riding before I'm allowed to ride the same bike as someone who's 6 years older than me, never ridden a bike before and taken DAS. I kinda understand why its that way though.
Also, if you're 15/16 and thinking of getting a 50cc, I wouldnt recommend it. As good of a time I had on mine, It wasn't worth it financially and it generally felt unsafe on the road... just get a bicycle.
