Data modeling comprises three stages and types of model - conceptual, logical and physical.

Linear progression through these stages limits the potential for oversight and errors.

Conceptual data models communicate business structures at a high level of abstraction and define what the system contains. They are system agnostic so aren’t limited by current technological constraints to allow for modeling the best possible system.

Logical data models are less abstract and define how a system should be implemented. They are still system agnostic, and build on conceptual models to detail their attributes and their relationships.

Physical data models are the least abstract. They are system specific and must adhere to the unique rules and features of the target technology. They introduce more detail to represent tables, columns, data types, views, constraints, indices, and procedures within the system.
