The modulator itself is inside the unit. That box attaches it to your tv and let's your cable tv pass through and that's it. You can either add a channel 3 or 4 carrier to the analog signal the NES modulates or skip the carrier and just put the 6 MHZ baseband signal directly into the tv. But it's mono sound only. Keep in mind most boxes bump that 240P signal up to 1080P meaning that your tv has to do a 4K still for most tvs today. It looked great on old tvs because it simply refreshed one field over and over again. This cleverly gave you "60 frames" without flicker using only half the resolution of a CRT

Oh fuck that could explain a lot on me not being able to make it work XD

throw a y splitter on that red audio out to fake the stereo sound vs just 1 speaker.

Just listening to the music in the background brings back memories of me playing this 🤞🏽🥲

It has one video out and one frequency out that’s either channel 3 or 4 depending on what channel’s frequency you have the switch set to on the back.

Except that the only problem with composite is that the audio only plays 1 sound on the left (unless there’s something wrong with my console)

Can’t recommend strongly enough to check what you’re using to convert composite to HDMI. Most converters are awful.

The back panel on the Nes is an RF port not an AV out. That is why it came with an AV out port on its side. Do you have any idea how expensive it would have been for Nintendo to implement two AV out ports in 1985?! Most TV's didn't come with AV out at the time and why all Nes's came packed with an RF switch. The next generation of gaming would be no different with...the Sega Genesis, TG-16, Snes, Neo Geo AES, Jaguar, and 3DO all came with RF switches. You had to buy their respective AV out separately. I know because I had to do this with many of these consoles (RF sucked). Hell, you could still get the UHF/VHF prong connectors for the Sega Genesis if you needed them.

For reference- We wouldn't see a console release out of the box with AV connectors as standard until 1995 with the Saturn and Playstation hit stores.

The AV cables make it so sound only comes out of one side of the speakers, you actually need a male to double female Audio Spliter

The way u called rf an Av out port made me want to rethink my life

The signal is rough with the AV as well

I have a top loader NES - How do you connect that to a TV that has only HDMI inputs?

My Sony tv has the av output, but it doesn’t work. I know the nes is working because the red light is on (not blinking) so Im just waiting for my av to hdmi converter (along with my snes cords) to come in the mail.

Dammit… I have the 2nd Gen NES (the compact one) which doesn’t have those AV outs… ugh…

Yeah I've been doing that but my nes will not show video! I'm using a old flat screen If that's the problem? (Edit: I don't have a controller for it yet)

Just get a CRTV. It’s the only proper way to play NES. Lag on a new tv is completely unacceptable. You’re going to be having a bad time trying to play Ninja Gaiden and Mike Tyson’s Punch.
