Rachmaninoff: Etude-Tableaux Op.39 No.5 in E-flat Minor (Lugansky)

A darkly brooding study in maintaining melodic clarity over thunderous chords. As always, Lugansky is excellent with counterpoint, and the chantlike melody sings beautifully.

Incredible chord at 4:35. Really beautiful!

An ''Étude'' may only be a musical piece of considerable difficulty for perfecting instrumental skills, but Rachmaninov's are as beautiful as short. This entire playlist is amazingly great.

One of the most "Rachmaninov" works of all Rachmaninoff. The image of a raging mighty ocean. Now I'm learning this very difficult study. The special difficulty is to sing all the additional voices harmoniously and meaningfully ... the texture, as always, is very polyphonic

Rachmaninoff is so fucking intense. I love it. He has a lot of commonalities with beethovens style. I love them both.

Listening to certain types of black metal reminds me of this, just the chaos, and overall atmosphere

Slight Scriabin influence, or the other way around?

The left hand's melody at 2:20 is so dark I just want more and more

The left-hand vehicle for the passion in the melody is the same Chopin uses at the end of his Lento C minor Nocturne.

Lots of recordings and Lugansky is my favorite Rach pianist but the best interpretation I ever heard was Van Cliburn's at the height of his power (his playing grew erratic). It was sheer poetry, absolute control and virtuosity on high.

Reminiscence of scriabin's style are heard throughout the piece, it is maybe a farewell to his dear friend, who knows...

1:26 - Remind anyone else of the development section of the Second Sonata?
