Rachmaninoff: Etude-Tableaux Op.39 No.5 in E-flat Minor (Lugansky)

A darkly brooding study in maintaining melodic clarity over thunderous chords. As always, Lugansky is excellent with counterpoint, and the chantlike melody sings beautifully.

Lots of recordings and Lugansky is my favorite Rach pianist but the best interpretation I ever heard was Van Cliburn's at the height of his power (his playing grew erratic). It was sheer poetry, absolute control and virtuosity on high.
