Sabaton - Coat of Arms - (Greek and English lyrics)
28η Οκτωβρίου 1940 - To ΟΧΙ των Ελλήνων
The Greco-Italian War was a conflict between Fascist Kindom of Italy and the Kingdom of Greece (Hellas) during World War Two which lasted from 28 October 1940 to 23 April 1941. Only by the German intervention in the Balkans Campaign the war was decited in the favour of the Axis Powers.
This song draws a parallel to the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars 480 BC, when among others 300 Spartiates under king Leonidas faced Xerxes I of Persia and his armies.
Ohi Day (in the song "No-day", also spelled Ochi Day, Greek: Επέτειος του «'Οχι» Epeteios tou "'Ohi", Anniversary of the "No") is celebrated throughout Greece on October 28 each year, to commemorate Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas' rejection of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on October 28, 1940.
Also important was the moral example, set in a time when only the British Empire resisted the Axis Powers, of a small country fighting off Fascist Italy, something reflected in the exuberant praise the Greek struggle received at the time. Most prominent is the quote of Winston Churchill:
"Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks."
"Freedom or Death" is the motto of Greece: "Eleftheria i Thanatos" (Ελευθερία ή θάνατος).
About Sabaton: Is a Grammis-nominated power metal band from Falun, Sweden formed in 1999. The band's main lyrical themes are those of historical wars. This is heard in albums Primo Victoria and Attero Dominatus where all of the songs, except final tracks, take inspiration from historical battles or war, such as the song "Back in Control" which refers to the Falklands War. Lyrical content drawn from World War II and World War I is prevalent and includes songs about battles and leaders on all sides of the conflict; resistance movements in occupied Poland and Norway, the Battle of Berlin and Winter War in Finland. As of later albums, the band has started to incorporate elements of progressive metal.
Coat Of Arms: A song about the Greco-Italian War during WWII and the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.
Lyrics to Coat Of Arms :
That dawn, envoy arrives
Morning of October 28th
No day, proven by deed
Descendence of Sparta,
Athens and Crete!
Look north, ready to fight
Enemies charge from the hills
To arms, facing defeat
There's no surrender,
there's no retreat
Time after time,
force their enemies back to the line
Call to Arms banners fly in the wind,
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of Arms reading freedom or death,
Blood of king Leonidas
Air raid, pounding the land
Bombers are flying both day and night
Endure, six days of rain
Dropped by invaders,
bomb raid in vain
Strike hard, the tables have turned,
Drive them back over the hills
At arms, just like before,
Soldiers, civilians, Hellas at war
By their own hand,
force their enemy out of their land
Call to Arms banners fly in the wind,
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of Arms reading freedom or death,
Blood of king Leonidas
Just like their ancestors ages ago
Fought in the place of the greeks
Cause we will remember what the place were called
Freedom or death in the plains
Just like their ancestors ages ago
Fought in the face of defeat
Those three hundred men left a pride to uphold
Freedom or death in effect
Then, now again
Blood of heroes saving their land
Call to Arms banners fly in the wind,
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of Arms reading freedom or death,
Blood of king Leonidas (x2)
